In the heart of Prague, Czech Republic, a 19th-century historic building stands as a modern marvel of sustainable architecture. Originally featuring an open rooftop garden, the building was transformed with a glass roof, creating a luminous atrium filled with natural light. The owner’s vision was to enhance well-being and air quality, blending nature with urban design. To achieve this, a massive green wall was commissioned, replacing the original courtyard garden.
NextGen Expert Flower Company, a Czech firm, designed an impressive 27-meter-high and 8-meter-wide green wall, entirely planted with hydroponic plants in 13/12 cm pots. With 5,500 plants, the wall achieved near-total coverage from day one. Using digital design and CAD drawings, the team created a vertical composition of plant arrangements that harmonized with the building’s grandeur. The installation demanded meticulous planning, and the Flower Company team underwent specialized training for high-altitude work. Today, much of the maintenance is performed by professional climbers.
The glass roof provides abundant natural light, supplemental lighting was added to ensure optimal light levels across all sections, managed through automated time zones. The wall features an advanced irrigation system with 7 independently controlled zones, all operated from a dedicated technical room. This project not only revitalizes a historic structure but also sets a benchmark for urban sustainability and biophilic design.
